Avatar Chikilicuatre is an indigenous Maori story telling tradition that was passed down to his children in the Maori language. A tale of a warrior god and his journey through the world, the story of Avatar Chikilicuatre is written in Maori and is about a young Maori princess, called Chikilicu, who travels into a new world in search of peace. Chikilicu's father, whom she was sent to protect, was a fierce warrior and her mother, the Queen, was an experienced healer. The young princess finds herself in the land of Oodumakua, where she learns that there is peace in this world only if all people live with their differences. After Chikilicu returns from Oodumakua, the King, a young warrior, who is named Kaingangare, demands that Chikilicu must marry him or be banished forever.
Chikilicuatre is asked to marry Kaingangare's son Ootirao'au but when she refuses the two battle over her life. Chikilicuatre refuses to give in to either of the men and, using her own powers, saves Ootirao'au. In an attempt to win Ootirao'au's love, she disguises herself as the beautiful but evil Queen, intending to marry him and kill Ootirao'au but he manages to escape her and Chikilicuatre's wrath.
But the struggle doesn't end here, as Chikilicuatre falls in love with a man called Tanehika'atao. The young woman sets off on a journey to locate him in order to rescue her beloved husband and save the world. The journey is a dangerous one, as Ootirao'au and Kaingangare lead their army against her. In the end, Chikilicuatre is forced to decide which world she would rather go to - the world of Oodumakua or the world of Chikiliitika (Chikili). Chikilicuatre, who lives happily in the latter, vows never to return home after her quest. This story of an indigenous Maori tale telling tradition, a story of love, courage and sacrifice, is a truly inspiring tale of what it means to live our lives with love and passion and to live the journey together.
